After Jesus’ return to Earth, a magnificent white horse carries him as he leads angels and saints in a dramatic battle between good and evil, as described in Revelation 19:11-21. Here’s a synopsis of the story, along with some commentary:
Heaven’s White Horse
In verse 11, the apostle John (who penned the book of Revelation) reveals his vision of the future after Jesus returns to Earth for the second time: “I saw heaven open up in front of me, and a white horse with a rider named Faithful and True stood there. He judges and conducts battle with justice.”
After Jesus returns to Earth, he will bring judgment against evil in the world, according to this verse. The white horse on which Jesus rides is a symbol for Jesus’ holy and pure power to defeat evil with good.
Angelic and Saintly Armies in Command
Verse 12 through 16 continue the story:
“His eyes are like flaming fire, and he wears countless crowns on his head. He has a name on him that no one else knows but him. His name is the Word of God, and he wears a garment drenched in blood. The armies of heaven, riding on white horses, pursued him. This name is imprinted on his robe and on his thigh: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”
The Antichrist, a deceptive and evil figure who the Bible says will appear on the Earth before Jesus returns and will be influenced by Satan and his fallen angels, will be fought by Jesus and the armies of heaven (which are made up of angels led by Archangel Michael and the saints — dressed in white linen that symbolizes holiness). According to the Bible, Jesus and his holy angels will win the fight.
The fact that “he has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself” refers to his ultimate power and holy mystery, the “Word of God” highlights Jesus’ role in creating the universe by speaking everything into existence, and “King of Kings and Lord of Lords” expresses Jesus’ ultimate authority as an incarnation of God.
Standing in the Sun, an Angel
In verses 17 and 18, an angel stands in the sun and makes the following announcement:
“And I saw an angel standing in the sun, calling out to all the birds flying through the air, ‘Come, gather together for God’s great banquet, so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, great and tiny.'”
This vision of a holy angel allowing vultures to feast on the lifeless remains of those who fought for evil illustrates the total destruction that wickedness brings.
